Famous violinist Joshua Bell was positioned in a DC subway stop during rush hour. He was performing a beautiful composition by Bach on his $3.5 million antique Stradivari violin. The hidden cameras watched 1,097 people hurry by Joshua Bell on their way to work. Only 7 people took the time to stop and listen. Mind you, Joshua Bell fills the most famous auditoriums all over the world. People pay hundreds of dollars to watch him perform. So my question to you: would you have stopped to listen? I'll be honest. I'm not sure I would have. "The Map of Yoga:The Treasure is not Hidden”. A seminar for yoga teachers and inspired practitioners. It is very important to know which way to go in order to arrive at your destination. This workshop is designed to change awareness about yourself so as to  bring the mind state of yoga (nirodah) into your hatha yoga practice using: classical yogic scriptures to understand the “state of yoga”, specific pointing exercises to enter the yogic state described, yoga nidra, several postures to allow participants to apply what they have learned.The second workshop will be "Break the Momentum of these Patterns: Amrit Method of Integrative Relaxation”. Experience complete physical, mental and emotional balance in your life today.&lt;br /&gt;Chandrakant Hiester is a senior teacher and seminar leader at the Amrit Yoga Institute in Salt Springs, Florida. He prepares, presents and leads professional trainings both nationally and overseas in Amrit Yoga and Amrit Yoga Nidra, as well as a variety of other yoga and stress-reduction based programs.   For the last seven years, Chandrakant has been instrumental in developing and presenting programs for the Amrit Yoga Institute. As a student and practitioner of yoga and meditation with Yogi Amrit Desai for over thirty years, his experience has given him a solid foundation for implementing programs that nurture and encourage positive changes in behavior, understanding and practice.   For over two decades, Chandrakant served in various capacitites at the Kripalu Center for Yoga &amp;amp; Health. Among them was his service as executive chef, supervising the preparation of tasty vegetarian meals for 500-700 guests daily. He also served as Yogi Desai's personal valet and chef for twelve years, where he learned authentic Indian cooking from Yogi Desai's beloved wife Mataji.   Chandrakant is a preacher's son, a Vietnam era veteran, a graduate of Rutgers University with a degree in psychology and a longtime practitioner of the martial arts. it has been part of Yogic disciplines for centuries, and was popularized in the West in the latter part of the 20th century. Breathwork has found its place at the forefront of mind-body medicine. By focusing on your breath, and breathing in certain ways, you can awaken healing energies and calming forces within you. By controlling and directing your breath, you can control and direct many so called “unconscious” reactions or “involuntary” processes. Through conscious breathing you can regulate your physiological, emotional, psychological and spiritual states.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Breathing is a language: the language of the soul. Like the expression on your face, the tone of your voice, or your posture, the way that you breathe reflects and expresses what is happening inside of you. Your breathing habits and patterns, and the way that you breathe in certain situations, says a lot about you. In fact, the deepest aspects of your personality--your core issues in life--are revealed in how you breathe!&lt;br /&gt;Breathing patterns are like fingerprints: unique to each of us, and unique in each moment. The way you breathe when you are afraid or upset is different than the way you breathe when you are calm or relaxed. The way you breathe when you are jealous or angry is different than the way you breathe when you are peaceful or “in the zone.” Every psychological state has a corresponding breathing quality or pattern. Every emotional state has a related breathing quality or pattern. And every chemical or physiological state has an associated breathing quality or pattern. As you change from one mood or state to another, your breathing pattern changes. These changes can be observed, measured and controlled. If you play with your breath, you will quickly find that you can access various energies, and you can trigger different thinking and feeling states of being.&lt;br /&gt;Breath awareness leads to self-awareness, and greater overall awareness and intuitive abilities. Breath awareness brings to light many unconscious impulses and reactions. This awareness can help us to prevent or resolve a host of health problems, life challenges, and relationship issues. If you can become aware of how you are breathing, especially when negative or limiting thoughts, or painful feelings, or destructive behaviors arise; and if you can redirect the flow of your breath at those times, many wonderful changes will occur!&lt;br /&gt;Transformational Breathing differs from other breathwork techniques in both intention and method. This process of opening up the unique breathing pattern of each individual is facilitated by various means, including hands on techniques, the use of affirmations, a sound technique called “toning”, and the conscious invocation of Spirit. Transformational Breath does not require a particular spiritual belief system or indeed any at all, but rather seeks to work consciously with the Body/Mind/Spirit system that makes up the totality of who we are.&lt;br /&gt;The reported benefits of Transformational Breathing are very diverse and no two sessions are ever the same. Most people are consciously aware after the first session that they are feeling more peaceful and freer from stress. When the breath is open and old emotions are cleared from the subconscious in this way, people can also experience a powerful sense of spiritual connection and it is not unusual to have people report seeing angels or connecting with spirit guides. The text of the Yoga Korunta "was imparted to Sri T. Krishnamacharya in the early 1900's by his Guru Rama Mohan Brahmachari, and was later passed down to Pattabhi Jois during the duration of his studies with Krishnamacharya, beginning in 1927" ("Ashtanga Yoga"). Since 1948, Pattabhi Jois has been teaching Ashtanga yoga from his yoga shala, the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute (Jois 2002 xvi), according to the sacred tradition of Guru Parampara [disciplic succession] (Jois 2003 12).&lt;br /&gt;Ashtanga yoga literally means "eight-limbed yoga," as outlined by the sage Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras. According to Patanjali, the path of internal purification for revealing the Universal Self consists of the following eight spiritual practices:&lt;br /&gt;Yama [moral codes] Niyama [self-purification and study] Asana [posture] Pranayama [breath control] Pratyahara [sense control] Dharana [concentration] Dhyana [meditation] Samadhi [contemplation] (Scott 14-17)&lt;br /&gt;The first four limbs—yama, niyama, asana, pranayama—are considered external cleansing practices. According to Pattabhi Jois, defects in the external practices are correctable. However, defects in the internal cleansing practices—pratyahara, dharana, dhyana—are not correctable and can be dangerous to the mind unless the correct Ashtanga yoga method is followed (Stern and Summerbell 35). For this reason, Pattabhi Jois emphasizes that the "Ashtanga Yoga method is Patanjali Yoga" (Flynn).&lt;br /&gt;The definition of yoga is "the controlling of the mind" [citta vrtti nirodhah] (Jois 2003 10). The first two steps toward controlling the mind are the perfection of yama and niyama (Jois 2003 10). However, it is "not possible to practice the limbs and sub-limbs of yama and niyama when the body and sense organs are weak and haunted by obstacles" (Jois 2002 17). A person must first take up daily asana practice to make the body strong and healthy (Jois 2003 10). With the body and sense organs thus stabilized, the mind can be steady and controlled (Jois 2002 16). With mind control, one is able to pursue and grasp these first two limbs (Flynn).&lt;br /&gt;To perform asana correctly in Ashtanga yoga, one must incorporate the use of vinyasa and tristhana. "Vinyasa means breathing and movement system. For each movement, there is one breath. For example, in Surya Namskar there are nine vinyasas. The first vinyasa is inhaling while raising your arms over your head, and putting your hands together; the second is exhaling while bending forward, placing your hands next to your feet, etc. In this way all asanas are assigned a certain number of vinyasas" ("Ashtanga Yoga").&lt;br /&gt;"The purpose of vinyasa is for internal cleansing" ("Ashtanga Yoga"). Synchronizing breathing and movement in the asanas heats the blood, cleaning and thinning it so that it may circulate more freely. Improved blood circulation relieves joint pain and removes toxins and disease from the internal organs. The sweat generated from the heat of vinyasa then carries the impurities out of the body. Through the use of vinyasa, the body becomes healthy, light and strong ("Ashtanga Yoga").&lt;br /&gt;Tristhana refers to the union of "three places of attention or action: posture, breathing system and looking place. These three are very important for yoga practice, and cover three levels of purification: the body, nervous system and mind. They are always performed in conjunction with each other" ("Ashtanga Yoga").&lt;br /&gt;Posture: "The method for purifying and strengthening the body is called asana" (Jois 2002 22). In Ashtanga yoga, asana is grouped into six series. "The Primary Series [Yoga Chikitsa] detoxifies and aligns the body. The Intermediate Series [Nadi Shodhana] purifies the nervous system by opening and clearing the energy channels. The Advanced Series A, B, C, and D [Sthira Bhaga] integrate the strength and grace of the practice, requiring higher levels of flexibility and humility. Each level is to be fully developed before proceeding to the next, and the sequential order of asanas is to be meticulously followed. Each posture is a preparation for the next, developing the strength and balance required to move further" (Pace). Without an earnest effort and reverence towards the practice of yama and niyama, however, the practice of asana is of little benefit (Flynn).&lt;br /&gt;Breathing: The breathing technique performed with vinyasa is called ujjayi [victorious breath] (Scott 20), which consists of puraka [inhalation] and rechaka [exhalation] ("Ashtanga Yoga"). "Both the inhale and exhale should be steady and even, the length of the inhale should be the same length as the exhale" ("Ashtanga Yoga"). Over time, the length and intensity of the inhalation and exhalation should increase, such that the increased stretching of the breath initiates the increased stretching of the body (Scott 21). Long, even breathing also increases the internal fire and strengthens and purifies the nervous system ("Ashtanga Yoga").&lt;br /&gt;Bandhas are essential components of the ujjayi breathing technique. Bandha means "lock" or "seal" (Scott 21). The purpose of bandha is to unlock pranic energy and direct it into the 72,000 nadi [energy channels] of the subtle body (Scott 21). Mula bandha is the anal lock, and uddiyana bandha is the lower abdominal lock ("Ashtanga Yoga"). Both bandhas "seal in energy, give lightness, strength and health to the body, and help to build a strong internal fire" ("Ashtanga Yoga"). Mula bandha operates at the root of the body to seal in prana internally for uddiyana bandha to direct the prana upwards through the nadis (Scott 21). Jalandhara bandha is the "throat lock" (Jois 2002 23, n.27), which "occurs spontaneously in a subtle form in many asanas due to the dristi ("gaze point"), or head position" (Scott 23). "This lock prevents pranic energy [from] escaping and stops any build-up of pressure in the head when holding the breath" (Scott 23). Without bandha control, "breathing will not be correct, and the asanas will give no benefit" ("Ashtanga Yoga").&lt;br /&gt;Looking Place: Dristhi is the gazing point on which one focuses while performing the asana ("Ashtanga Yoga"). "There are nine dristhis: the nose, between the eyebrows, navel, thumb, hands, feet, up, right side and left side. Dristhi purifies and stabilizes the functioning of the mind" ("Ashtanga Yoga"). In the practice of asana, when the mind focuses purely on inhalation, exhalation, and the drishti, the resulting deep state of concentration paves the way for the practices of dharana and dhyana, the six and seventh limbs of Ashtanga yoga (Scott 23).&lt;br /&gt;Instruction in pranayama can begin after one has learned the asanas well and can practice them with ease (Jois 2002 23). "Pranayama means taking in the subtle power of the vital wind through rechaka [exhalation], puraka [inhalation], and kumbhaka [breath retention]. Only these kriyas, practiced in conjunction with the three bandhas [muscle contractions, or locks] and in accordance with the rules, can be called pranayama" (Jois 2002 23). The three bandhas are "mula bandha, uddiyana bandha, and jalandhara bandha, and they should be performed while practicing asana and the like" (Jois 2002 23). "When mula bandha is perfect, mind control is automatic" ("Ashtanga Yoga"). "In this way did Patanjali start Yoga. By using mulabandha and by controlling the mind, he gradually gained knowledge of Yoga" (Jois 2003 11).&lt;br /&gt;Practicing asana for many years with correct vinyasa and tristhana gives the student the clarity of mind, steadiness of body, and purification of the nervous system to begin the prescribed pranayama practice (Flynn). "Through the practice of pranayama, the mind becomes arrested in a single direction and follows the movement of the breath" (Jois 2002 23). Pranayama forms the foundation for the internal cleansing practices of Ashtanga yoga (Flynn).&lt;br /&gt;The four internal cleansing practices—pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, and samadhi—bring the mind under control (Stern and Summerbell 35). When purification is complete and mind control occurs, the Six Poisons surrounding the spiritual heart [kama (desire), krodha (anger), moha (delusion), lobha (greed), matsarya (sloth), and mada (envy)]—"will, one by one, go completely" (Stern and Summerbell 35), revealing the Universal Self. /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: lucida grande;font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;" &gt;"Let sleeping dogs lie..." So hard for most of us, myself especially, to do. There is always, seemingly, one more thing that needs to be done or some gnawing feeling that I haven't done enough. For the past couple of months, I have felt as if I have been riding a huge Tsunami-sized wave named OmVibe.  What had once been a long-standing, yet deeply submerged dream, surfaced magnificently in a dizzying sea of manifestation and divine guidance. I find that my biggest challenge, as with this writing, is to simply get myself out of the way and let it all flow through me. So there are lots of deep breaths, constant watching of my old thought-processes, and always profound wonder and gratitude that there are indeed, forces so much greater than any of us could imagine which propel a dream forward.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are endless unexpected details, and tasks that take me to my edge daily. But I realize that we are never given more than we can handle and when it seems so the lesson is in learning how to ask for help. The yogic journey is about giving birth to our true, authentic selves. For most of us, myself included, this can bring up incredible fears. We all have such unique and individual gifts to share and so it can seem like such unchartered territory. We are literally pioneering our own undiscovered new world and the usual comfort zones are no longer available. I find myself constantly wanting to go backwards and latch onto some outdated version of what used to work for me, only to find that it no longer does. We are being asked to completely step outside of our old boxes and use all of our God-given talents, intuitive abilities and present moment awareness. There is no instruction manual, except for the inner-map that all of us have deeply coded into our very cells.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"If you do not go within, you go without," and other pithy spiritual sayings used to leave me a bit hollow until I really began to grasp that all wisdom lies within our bodies. It is about switching off the ego-laden mind chatter that wants to keep us programmed to an old, dying paradigm, and tapping into our sensory consciousness.  Then we can begin to feel the gentle tugs of spirit and trust that we are being guided to higher ground.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;These are not the most comfortable times we have ever lived through. That is evident everywhere you turn, most are feeling the huge shifts currently sweeping through every segment of our lives. To cling to what is comfortable will only prolong your gestation period. A new, bold you is waiting to emerge and comfort zones are stagnating. Better to take a deep breath, grab your surf board and jump on your own tsunami-sized wave and ride that sucker until it hits that beautiful shore of your new life.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Let OmVibe Yoga studio be a nurturing incubator for your new self. It is a safe, warm and oh-so-inviting spiritual haven of like-minded souls on the same journey as you. I can't offer you an exact map of your unique path, but I, and all of the teachers and staff can compassionately share with you tried and true systems of unlocking your hidden treasure maps and opening doors to your soul's purpose. Yoga allows you to become aware of your body and to then begin to listen to its infinite wisdom. The poses are archetypal images from the collective consciousness that wake up the dormant parts of our being and cause us to "re-member" who we truly are. We are all "Warriors" and "Eagles" holding our ground while visioning new vistas.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There is so much programming and so many false belief systems that need to be cleared and with each practice it is as if we are accessing these deeply held "samskaras" and flowing them out with every conscious exhalation. It is more of a process of shedding layers of "not you" to uncover true "you."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I invite you to begin the journey of a thousand miles with that first fledgling little step onto your yoga mat. I promise you one thing, your life will never be the same and you will never regret your time spent uncovering your shining self.
